"... And that's how I spent my birthday yesterday," said the 56-year-old Dreamcatcher Kokopelli Foxglove to his class of superhero students from Pantheon Prodigies, as they stood in a semicircle around the Resolution War Memorial that had been built on the site of the original Lair Legion Mansion in Parodiopolis decades before. "It can be easy to forget that what we've come to think of as orderly, static, safely distant history was once a living, breathing, chaotic and immediate now to the people who went through it, even for those of us who did experience it firsthand."
"Professor Foxglove?" 14-year-old Whitney Clement ventured, brushing her golden brown ringlets of hair back nervously from her cocoa-complexioned face. "Why didn't you ever tell us that story before?"
"Because it didn't happen until yesterday," the former CrazySugarFreakBoy! chuckled with a weathered grin and a gravelly voice, checking to see which ones had actually understood his lesson.
"But you said it happened when you were still just 21," protested 15-year-old Mandi Dean, narrowing her scaly green eyelids in concentration, from behind her cornsilk-blonde bangs. "Well, technically, when your modern-day self was transported 35 years into the past by extradimensional magic, but still ..."
"And yet, in all the tales I've told and retold to you all, over and over and over again, I've never once mentioned this particular series of events, have I?" the father of the HyperActiveLunaticMiss! gently prodded, pushing his pupils to figure this one out on their own. "So, what does that tell you?"
"Oh!" exclaimed 16-year-old Sarah Diller, still running one hand pensively through her long midnight-black tresses, even as she bounced anxiously in her form-fitting green sweatshirt, with the yellow diamond logo on the chest. "But - no, that can't be right. Is it - are you saying that what had already happened, that it changed after the fact?"
"That's impossible, though!" challenged 17-year-old Ian Waltz, frowning dismissively under his sparse but meticulously groomed goatee, even as his piercing green eyes wavered uncertainly. "I mean, isn't it?"
"Past, present and future are all just places," Dreamcatcher Kokopelli Foxglove explained at last, beaming at the opportunity to offer his expository revelation. "Before yesterday, I didn't remember all of my teammates on the Lair Legion being regressed to their 16th birthday because, before yesterday, it wasn't a part of my past yet. The past is not a collection of dead moments, frozen in time in a neat little sequence. The past is still alive, and it's still happening, right now, right as we speak. In a sense, the Resolution War never really ended, because for those of us who exist in that place and time of history, it's still very much in the future, and its outcome is still very much up for grabs. Past is not merely prologue; it's also entirely mutable, as well. We may think we're done with it, but it's definitely not done with us."
The man who had once been CrazySugarFreakBoy! ended his lessons for the day with that thought, as the children of one possible future of the Parodyverse pondered how the constantly-in-motion present could still affect their own past.
